Reds boss tips McCarthy for England call

Liverpool manager has tipped Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to play for England one day, following his side’s stalemate with the Royals.

The former Royals boss witnessed his side denied all three points thanks to an outstanding goalkeeping display from the 23-year old, who has represented his country at under 21 level. Rodgers, who worked with Alex during his short tenure with the Royals four years ago, feels he has the potential to go all the way with England.

Quoted by Sporting Life, Rodgers said: ‘Absolutely I can see him playing for England, there’s no question about that. Our players couldn’t have done any more. Sometimes you have days where the keeper makes one or two good saves, but we had 14 shots on target away from home today. He’s genuinely going to be a top, top keeper.’

‘Reading has always produced very good goalkeepers so he was down the pecking order at the time.He has all the qualities to be a top, top keeper – he’s 6’5′, makes good saves, is good on his feet and is very calm and assured despite being very young.’

If Alex continues to shine until the end of the season, I can definitely see him in upcoming squads. Ironically enough, Roy Hodgson was at the Madejski Stadium to watch the game on Saturday and would have been impressed by what he saw. His boss at under 21 level Stuart Pearce would also vouch for this.

Yep, definitely. It was his first game since November due to injury and that game back in November, he played a blinder funnily enough!
