After one of the best goalkeeping performances of the season, Nigel Adkins has rightly praised his goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The Royals boss started with the 23-year old due to an injury to first choice goalkeeper Adam Federici, but it was a blessing in disguise, as McCarthy made some outstanding saves to earn the Royals their first point in eight league games against Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the stalemate with Liverpool, the former Southampton manager said: ‘The goalkeeping display was outstanding wasn’t it? I always say the goalkeeper is the most important player in the team, maybe because of my own background.’

‘But today it was underlined. He’s a young English goalkeeper and I know he’s got a bright future. We’ve kept a clean-sheet because Alex has pulled off some fantastic saves. But the players have worked very hard as a unit as well today.’
