Young defender, and vice captain, Alex Pearce has signed a new long term contract at the club until the summer of 2013. He had been out of contract at the end of the current season but opted to extend his Royal appointment.

Pearce is currently out of the side and sitting on the bench but despite his lack of first team football in recent weeks he is pleased to have commited to the club.

‘I’m not in the team at the moment, but I’ll keep plugging away. I’ll just keep doing what I’ve been doing, training hard and playing for the reserves and hopefully show what I can do and push for a place in the side. I just need to bide my time.’

With Ivar Ingimarsson out of contract in the summer and no progress on the new one being signed, Pearce will have a big role to play in the coming years. Hopefully under the guidance of Brian McDermott he will grow into a top quality centre half.

You forget he is only 21 years old and has played nearly 100 games in league football including loan spells at Bournemouth, Norwich and Southampton.

He is likely to back on the bench on Saturday though with Matt Mills returning to the side at centre back.

Great news, a lot of fans have been on his back but the club appear to have a lot of faith in him
