Brian McDermott has hit out at some of the tactics deployed at this summers World Cup and insists he will always try to win, for the fans. He specifically mentioned Greece, who stuck 10 men behind the ball for most of the game against Argentina on Tuesday night.

He told the Reading Chronicle, ‘I watched Greece against Argentina the other night and all I see is teams putting 10 men behind the ball for 75 minutes. It might work for some but all I know is I couldn’t play like that.’

McDermott’s Royals became one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the second half of last season and our home fans were certainly entertained, with a number of crushing victories including 6-0 against Peterborough, 5-0 against Sheff Wed and 4-1 against Preston.

He continued, ‘I want our fans to go home with a smile on their faces,’ declared McDermott. I want them to enjoy it and I will never stray from that. I think fans simply want to see their team trying to win. Even if you lose, I still think they appreciate what you are trying to do.’
