Another one that has been in the pipeline a while, but we have confirmed the signing of defender Anton Ferdinand.

The former West Ham player has signed on a free transfer and signed a two-year contract earlier today. Ferdinand will take the number four shirt, but will not make his debut against Newport tomorrow, as he awaits international clearance from the Football League.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Anton said: ‘I’ve been away from English football for a year and had some tough times. It feels fantastic to sign for a club like Reading. The first thing you feel when you come here is that it’s a family environment.’

‘I’ve got things to prove, to myself and everyone. A lot of people have written me off and doubted me, but I’m here to prove to people that I can offer a lot to English football. I want to offer what I can to Reading, and hopefully that means promotion.’

I know a few fans are underwhelmed about this, but I think it’s a good addition on the whole, as it makes a lot of sense. Not only does he bring needed experience to the squad, but offers defensive competition for Pearce, Morro and Hector, who are the only senior centre backs.
