Vital Reading season preview

Founded: 1932

Nickname: The Latics

Ground: DW Stadium (Capacity: 25,138)

Last season finish: 5th – Championship

Manager: Uwe Rosler – The German has transformed Wigan since taking over back in December, turning them into promotion contenders, from a mid-table side under Owen Coyle. The job he did at Brentford earned similar praise, but will want to go one better with promotion this time round, after missing out in the play-offs in the previous two seasons.

Key player: Don Cowie – The Scotland international failed to feature much under Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season, so opted to leave for Wigan in the summer, a move which made great sense for both parties. Cowie already has recent experience of winning this division and his creative spark from midfield adds more flair to an already strong Wigan midfield.

Season Preview: Missing out on the play-offs for some teams can be damaging, but Wigan will fancy their chances to go one better this season, considering their incredible progress since Christmas. They haven’t lost any of their key players over the summer and have good options in defence and midfield, and if Riera can hit the ground running in England, will definitely be in the promotion race this year.
