Coppell Feared The Boot

Steve Coppell spoke to the local press today about how he feared the sack had Reading not been in the mix for promotion to the Premiership this season.

Many would say that the Royals are one point away from reaching the Premier League going on the past seasons totals for going up, a win against Wolves would seal it in my opinion. But mathematics say that at this time Reading still need seven points.

Twice since Coppell took over have Reading been close to the play offs but fell just that little bit short, now the boss says that he would have accepted calls for his head had he not taken that step further this time around.

Speaking to the Evening Post, he said: ?When I was at Palace I was looking at a five-year build-up and undoubtedly wherever you are now you won’t get five years to achieve that.

?In many ways I think there would have been a ground-swell here if we weren’t in the top half of the table. I am fully aware my job would have been on the line.

?I think a lot of people would have been saying ?he’s been here almost three years and now it’s time to let someone else have a go’ and I can fully understand that.

?It’s hypothetical but it’s certainly realistic to say this season was my opportunity to do something here.?
