Subject to a late change, the referee for Saturday’s game against Wolves will be Peter Walton of Northamptonshire.
Walton started his career in Northampton in 1986, he soon moved on to be a Football League assistant ref to get on the Premier League assistants list in 1994, two years later he made the FIFA assistants list. In 1998 he became a league referee.
The highlights of his career so far are being an assistant referee at the 1996 FA Cup Final between Man United and Liverpool and also at the European Championships in 1996. Walton also refereed the LDV Vans Trophy Final in 2003 and the division 1 and 3 Play-Offs in the same year.
Walton has been in charge of a Royals game this season, he was the man in the middle for the FA Cup 4th round replay against Birmingham City at St Andrews. Reading lost the game 2-1 and Brynjar Gunnarsson was the only player booked that evening.
Walton’s record this season has seen him take charge of 33 games, in that time he has given out 99 yellow cards and six red.
His highest total of cards dished out in one game is seven, this has happened three times, (Palace 1-0 Plymouth, 7 yellows) (QPR 0 Leeds 1, 6 yellows, 1 red) and (Everton 1-0 Blackburn, 6 yellows, 1 red.)
Walton has not had a game this season in which he has shown no cards.
