Royals keeper Adam Federici was forced to sit and watch from the bench as Australia were easily beaten in their first World Cup game by the impressive Germans.

They were 2-0 down at the break, the second goal the fault of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, and the task got even harder when they had Tim Cahill harshly sent off.

The Germans added another couple of goals to record the biggest win of the tournament so far.

They now face Ghana on Saturday looking for a win to ensure they don’t go home early.
