Daniel Carrico has appeared out of the darkness in recent weeks and his manager said he is making good progress.

The 24-year old signed from Sporting Lisbon at the start of January with a good reputation, but a lack of fitness and adaption to the country has affected his minutes on the pitch. However, a good cameo performance against Liverpool reminded Adkins of his talents, but the Royals boss has said he is still far away from full fitness.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘He’s done well on the training ground. He’s an awful long way from where he needs to be but he’s only going to get there by working hard on the training ground and getting the opportunity to go and play. You can see he can control and pass the football.’

‘The only way he’ll be able to play 90 minutes is by playing 90 minutes, that`s where we’ve got to build up to for him. He was the captain of Sporting Lisbon, he’s a young player with a growing reputation, he’d been out for almost a full season with a knee injury when he joined us, but I’m positive about the future for him.’

It’s good to see that Adkins isn’t rushing Carrico into the deep end, despite that lively substitute appearance against Liverpool. It is clear his knee injury is still affecting him and restricting his fitness, but I’m sure he will have a massive part to play to next season, presuming he is still here!
