World Cup dream over for the Irish

After a 1-0 defeat in Dublin on Saturday, the Irish headed to Paris desperate to overturn that deficite and made a great start when Spurs striker Robbie Keane scored in the first half. No further goals followed and the tie went to extra time, during which Thiery Henry handled a ball to stop it going out of play and crossed for William Gallas to score the vital winning goal. The Irish players were fuming and couldn’t raise themselves to grab a second goal that would have sent them through (on away goals).

The only current Reading player in the squad was Darren O’Dea and he didn’t even make the match day squad, however Kevin Doyle would have been a contender for Man of the Match after putting in a fine shift upfront. Stephen Hunt was an unused substitute.

It means that the likes of Shane Long, and possibly even Noel Hunt if he could have proved his fitness, are rethinking plans for the summer and will be left to cheer on England instead!!

Noel Hunt summed up the feeling of the Green Army this morning with his latest Twitter update – “F****ng Cheating French C***s!!”

Any country that would have Shane Long in their World Cup squad doesn’t deserve to be at the World Cup! Thierry did us all a favour – can’t wait to see the Irish crying into their guinness’ when we are all in South Africa!

I am gutted for Doyle though….
