Key defender Ibrahima Sonko has committed himself to the Royals cause by declining a call up from Senegal for the second time this year in favour of staying with his club side.

Rather than travel for his countries friendly against Ivory Coast on August 16th, Sonko has decided to stay in Berkshire in an attempt to get himself completely over a niggling ankle injury in time for the clubs Premiership kick-off against Middlesbrough.

Earlier this year, the defender who is still eligible to represent France aswell having never turned out for Senegal, turned down a call-up to the African Nations Cup squad in order to concentrate on Reading’s promotion bid, something which endeared him greatly to Royals fans.

He told Reading’s official site ‘I wont be going, its just before the start of the season. My ankle is still a little sore from playing on it last season, and I dont want to risk it.’
