Royston Drenthe has said he wants to be at Reading for a long time and also says his fitness has improved massively.

The summer signing joined the Royals with a series of fitness issues, including recent injuries and poor match fitness through lack of playing time. However, the backroom staff have worked hard to get Royston into shape and it appears the one-time Dutch international is nearing full fitness.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website about his early days at Reading, Drenthe said: ‘I thank the gaffer, the coaches and everyone who has worked really hard with me. It was really tough in pre-season but I’m in good shape and I feel really good.’

‘I said to my teammates, I’m really happy to be here and I hope that I can be here for a long time. Blackpool is the next game and we have to be confident. It will not be easy against them, they are on an up at the moment. We have to go there and prove ourselves.’

It’s nice to see that Royston wants to have a long future here and not just use us to get his name back out in European football. We have seen glimpses of what he is capable of already, but I’m sure he will get better with every game, which is bad news for other Championship sides!
