Royals dismiss Wolves-McDermott link

Reading have been quick to deny any sort of reports linking manager Brian McDermott to the vacant Wolves post.

Several reports have stated that McDermott is on the list of potential candidates to succeed former boss Mick McCarthy, who was sacked on Monday. Other names on that list are reported to be Steve Bruce, Alan Curbishley and recently sacked Huddersfield boss Lee Clark.

However, Reading’s Director of Football Nicky Hammond has ruled out any potential deal for the former Slough boss. He told the Reading Chronicle: ‘I know the Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey well but I haven’t spoken to him in the last 48 hours. Look at Brian’s record since he became our manager, it is exceptional.’

The 50-year old has done a magnificent job with the Royals, leading them a successful ninth place finish in his first season and a play-off final the season following under a tight budget. His job has been one that has regularly been under the radar, despite gaining many plaudits for his work.

McDermott’s win percentage is among the best in the club’s history, winning 47% of his games in charge. After working at the club for 10 years as a scout and reserve team manager, he made the step up in December 2009 as caretaker manager and after some fine performances under his reign, he was appointed on a full-time basis a month later.
