Reading defender Nicky Shorey has said the Royals need to be active in the January transfer window, but shouldn’t be spending ‘silly money’.

The Royals now find themselves bottom of the Premier League table and manager Brian McDermott is set to bring in new recruits to aid a survival challenge. However, similarly to Adam Federici a few months ago, Shorey has urged to not go mad in the transfer market, as he reckons the current batch of players are capable enough.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, the former England international said: ‘New players always bring new enthusiasm and make the players that are here buck their ideas up a bit and try and push on. Hopefully we will add a few but we don’t need to go silly, the lads have shown they are more than capable but we need to do it for 90 minutes.’

‘Spending money doesn’t always get you where you want to be, we have to pull together as a group. We back the manager 100%, it’s not right to talk about him. He’s doing a marvelous job every since I came here, every lad here would die for the manager.’
