Cheltenham manager John Ward has revealed he tried to sign Icelandic powerhouse Brynjar Gunnarsson on a loan contract to ease his midfield woes.

‘I asked Steve Coppell if I could have Gunnarsson on loan but nothing came of it,’ said the Cheltenham boss.

Ward was keen to land the 31-year-old after struggling to replace Grant McCann who was sold to Barnsley.

‘I then had to smile when I saw him score at Old Trafford.

‘We didn’t get him but at least it shows I am asking for some good players.’

Ward`s hunt for a midfield replacement continues?

Especially so, given that he’s played an important role for us this season. Fair enough, he’s not started every game, but he’s not exactly been left out in the cold either. I’m sure he’s happy with life at the Madejski Stadium, and it would take more than Cheltenham to lure him away.
