McCarthy has been receiving all the praise in recent weeks, but is giving for a change, praising the impact of Nigel Adkins.

The former Southampton boss has only won one of his eight games in charge, but the team have portrayed a more positive and attractive outlook under Adkins. McCarthy has probably been the player that has received the most plaudits in the Adkins era so far and deservedly so.

The former England under 21 international has appeared in six of Adkins’ seven games as Royals boss, having taken over from previous number one, Adam Federici. Quoted by Club Call, the keeper said: ‘I think the new manager has settled in really well and all the boys have grown to him really quickly.’

‘Every manager has there own philosophy of how they want to play, and everyone can see he wants us to get the ball down and pass it, and all the lads are enjoying that and I’m sure it will bring us success. Obviously we’re disappointed to go down but we’ll be looking to come back straight away next season.’

A lot of the players have spoken very positively of Adkins and its those positive vibes that give good signs going to next season, hopefully not knocking their confidence as much with the reality of relegation. Once McCarthy fully adapts to his style, he will be the complete keeper.
