Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak made his debut for the club, but the Royals went down 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.

For the third pre-season game running, Royals boss Brian McDermott named two-seperate teams for each half, but neither side could prevent a loss at the hands of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Mike Jones opened the scoring for the Owls just before half-time with a good strike from the edge of the box.

Reading had their chances to equalise throughout the game, but the match was put beyond doubt when Chris O’Grady grabbed a second for Wednesday. Striker Marlon Harewood put Sean Morrison under pressure and gave himself an opening, but after his shot was saved, O’Grady tapped in the rebound.

Reading first half: Andersen, Cummings, Mariappa, Gorkss, Shorey, Tabb, Leigertwood, Church, Hunt, Roberts

Reading second half: Andersen, Gunnarsson, Morrison, Pearce, Harte, Antonio, Guthrie, McAnuff, Robson-Kanu, Le Fondre, Pogrebnyak
