Pearce on verge of signing new contract

It may have clicked with Alex Pearce that no Premier League side wants to take a risk on him, so looks set to make a contract U-turn.

The 24-year old was officially released by the Royals at the start of the month, after continual failures in attempting to get Pearce to sign a new deal. However, after quotes made last week by Pearce, saying he would still like to stay, according to the Reading Post, he may well be remaining at the Madejski Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland international felt that he was being neglected by the club in terms of wages, being offered a deal way below the average at the club. Liverpool and Newcastle were reportedly keen on signing the central defender, but have not followed up their interest with any concrete offers.

It appears that Pearce will sign a new deal in the next few days, but will it be the same? A player that was renowned for his badge-kissing antics, yet has only been swayed to stay due to money. I will be glad if he stays, but will face stiff competition from Mariappa & Morrison, who looked like they are Adkins’ preferred partnership at the moment.
