New Royals midfielder has England ambitions

Reading midfielder Danny Guthrie feels that his move to the Royals can help him earn an England call-up.

The 25-year old’s deal was ratified by the Premier League on Monday, meaning that Guthrie is now officially a Reading player. He joins on a free transfer from Newcastle and has already said how it wasn’t a hard decision to join the club, especially with the lure of first-team football and possibly an international call-up.

Speaking to Jonny Fordham of the Reading Post, Guthrie said: ‘I`ve come here to play and if that happens then I think it will give me a chance of breaking into the England squad. That`s the way I`m looking at it. I know I will get a chance to play at Reading and that if I`m playing well I`ll stay in the team.’

“I think it`s exciting times with the England set-up and if you`re good enough you should get a chance, regardless of the club you play for. It`s exciting times, but also a bit nerve-wracking as it feels like it`s my first day at a new school tomorrow. Last season I played some of the best football of my career.’

These are very ambitious words from Guthrie but it does show that the lad has some confidence in himself, which is good to see.
