Reading manager Brian McDermott has spoke of his praise for his striker Jason Roberts, claiming he is a fantastic role model and a great person to have in and around the Royals squad.

Since signing from Blackburn a few weeks ago, the 34-year old experienced striker has made a big impact at the Madejski Stadium so far, scoring two goals in as many games and putting in some fine performances alongside Noel Hunt in the two games he has played.

McDermott was keen to sing his praises and told Sky Sports: ‘It’s great just having him around as a focal point for our attack and as a person. The lads like having him around. He can hold the ball up and keep it. That’s the first 90 minutes he has played for a while.’

Roberts’ first goal for the club came two weeks ago against Bristol City, where he bundled the ball home after David James saved his penalty. His second was equally scruffy as he tapped in from a yard, from a Matt Connolly header at the back post.

Many fans are anticipating a potential partnership between Roberts and Adam Le Fondre, which according to many could suit both players with Le Fondre’s goalscoring and poaching ability in front of goal. However, Hunt looks to be forming a formidable partnership with the Grenada international.
