Reading manager Brian McDermott has said Daniel Carrico’s lack of fitness has restricted first team opportunities, but is edging closer to a return.

The 24-year old moved to Madejski Stadium at the start of January, but has only made one appearance for the Berkshire side, coming against West Bromwich Albion last month. However, Carrico was taken off at half time by McDermott, with the Portuguese midfielder appearing to struggle with a lack of match fitness.

Speaking to the Reading Post, McDermott said: “He hadn`t played much before coming here and I threw him in early. That was maybe a little bit unfair on him. He`s played a couple of reserve games and he is getting there. It might take a while, but it`s no problem. Since he has turned up we have won a lot of games.”

I would hope to see Carrico back in a Reading shirt soon, as its clear that the lad has talent. The decent form of Leigertwood and Akpan will make it tough for him to get back in, especially with Karacan also lurking around the fringes of the first team. Providing we stay up, I’m sure we will see the best of him next season.
