McCarthy hopes for England call

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has said that if he continues his good form at club level, he hopes he can have a chance to be in the England squad.

The 22-year old has already had experience at under 21 level and went to the European Championships in 2011, but Frankie Fielding was preferred for a starting spot. However, McCarthy displayed some goalkeeping heroics against Swansea on Saturday, making five superb saves to keep the home side at bay in the 2-2 draw.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McDermott said: ‘It`s a massive point from a tough place to go. We`re only six games in to the season and we definitely have something to build on. It was disappointing not to win, but I was pleased with the way things went for me. It was a busy second half.’

‘We knew we`d be up against it as we were two goals up. But we dropped off a little bit and made it easy for them to play. Obviously there are a lot of good English keepers out there. Joe Hart is an unbelievable keeper and he’s been doing it for years. I will just keep doing my thing and see what happens. Hopefully I will get there one day.’

Do you think McCarthy can make it into the England squad, or does he have to prove some consistency, showing he isn’t a one-trip pony? With the inexperience of Jack Butland and Fraser Forster making it into Roy Hodgson’s most recent squad, the Royals academy graduate must surely have a chance.
