Reading midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson has left the club after an 8-year tenure with the Royals.

The 37-year old has opted to return to his native Iceland to take up a player coach role at KR, where Brynjar began his professional playing career. The experienced midfielder did not make any appearances for the Royals this season, but did occasionally appear for the under 21 side, also applying some of his coaching with the youngsters.

The player branded Bryniesta by Royals fans will be missed, making some superb cameo appearances in the hooped shirt. He made 142 league appearances in total under three different managers at the Madejski Stadium, scoring nine goals in the process. Brynjar also scored a memorable header against Manchester United in the FA Cup in 2007, as the Royals drew 1-1 at Old Trafford.

It goes without saying that everyone concerned with Reading FC wishes Brynjar all the best for the future!
