The very sad news that Ian Porterfield has lost his battled with colon cancer, and sadly passed away at the age of 61 has been revealed.

Porterfield, who played five matches for Reading in 1976, and managed the club between 1991 and 1993 is most famously remembered and regarded by Sunderland fans, as it was his goal in 1973 FA Cup Final against Leeds United that gave Sunderland one of the greatest shocks of Cup Final history.

He enjoyed mixed success during his managerial career in British football, but his quality can’t be doubted, as he managed no fewer than six national sides, Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Oman and Trinidad and Tobago, and most recently Armenia.

Porterfield was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this but the true testament of the man is the fact that he carried on his duties with Armenia until just before his lost his battle with cancer.

All our thoughts will be with Porterfield’s family, including his wife Glenda, at this difficult time.
