Nicky Hammond, the Director of Football at Reading, has revealed the club made an approach for USA star Jozy Altidore.

Altidore is currently playing for MLS side New York Red Bulls and has recently made an impact for the US national team, with three caps to his name and one goal, scoring in last weeks draw with Mexico.

The rising star is the youngest scorer in MLS history and has got 13 goals for his club, 2 of them coming against David Beckham’s LA Galaxy.

Despite the interest from Reading, Hammond has admitted that the club would have faced difficulty signing the promising youngster.

Hammond told the official club site, ‘We spoke to the MLS but made no direct contact with the player himself.

‘He’s an exciting young talent but it became clear that the MLS didn’t want to lose him.

‘There would also have been work permit issues because he’s not played many senior international games yet.’
