Former Reading loanee Ryan Bertrand has picked up a Champions League winners medal, after winning the competition with Chelsea.

The 22-year old made his Champions League debut in yesterday’s final with Bayern Munich, becoming the first player to achieve this in the competition’s history. Bertand was also the first former Reading player to ever take part in a Champions League final, with fellow left-back Ian Harte only making it to a semi-final with Leeds in 2001.

The former Norwich player started the game on the left wing, despite primarily playing left-back. Bertrand had a very successful loan spell with the Royals back in the 2009/10 season, playing 44 of the 46 games and coming third in the Player of the Season vote. Rumours circulated that Brian McDermott wanted to retain Bertrand for the following season but was thwarted by Chelsea, who said he had a part to play in first-team affairs.
