According to reports, former Tottenham full-back Erik Edman could be playing Premiership football again come January.

Edman is currently plying his trade at French club Rennes, but with his contract set to expire in the summer, the Swede is weighing up his options.

With Nicky Shorey’s future at the club still in doubt, Steve Coppell could well be in the market for a left back when the transfer window opens.

Reading boss Coppell has already made it clear that he is looking to strengthen the squad in January.

Chief Scout Brian McDermott told the club website ‘We’ve got positions that we want to go for.

‘There are targets in mind, players that we’ve watched and players we know.

‘We’ve done a lot of work, it’s been a busy three or four months.

‘We’ve been out scouting, looking at lots of players and talking to people.

‘We’ve got scouts around Europe and done a lot of miles.’

News of potential new signings will be a welcome relief to Reading fans who have grown increasingly frustrated after seeing the squad weaken rather than strengthen, since their record breaking promotion 18 months ago.
