Royston Drenthe’s tained spell at Reading appears to be nearing an end, after the player revealed he is no longer wanted.

On the former Real Madrid star’s Instagram, he commented the following to a fan questioning his future at the club:

Quite broken English there, but the main points are clear – he is no longer wanted at Reading Football Club. He hasn’t traveled with the squad to the Midlands training camp this week and seems to have no future here anymore, just over a year after signing.

He also hints at how the club can bring in four new players when he departs the club, mainly down to his wages, which aren’t specifically known. The problem now is, who is going to take him? Despite his previous stardom, who is going to want to take a risk on him?

Drenthe made just 23 appearances in a Reading shirt, scoring just two goals in his short tenure. Adkins was clearly not his biggest fan, often omitting him from the starting XI and even the 18-man squads – I’m sure he won’t be too concerned about him leaving the club.

There was the odd moment of promise from Royston, but simply not enough from the minutes he had on the pitch and the reputation he once had. I thought there could maybe have been a way back for him if he sorted his act out, but this was obviously the last straw for him and the club.
