Defender content to fight for place

Shaun Cummings has become the forgotten man for the second time in his Reading career, but is not giving up just yet.

The 24-year old only made nine appearances in the Premier League last season and his last overall appearance was in the FA Cup against Crawley in January. It appears that Cummings, who was first choice in the 2011/12 campaign, is now third-choice in the pecking order, behind January signing Stephen Kelly and Chris Gunter.

Speaking to the Reading Post, Cummings said: “As a player you`re always going to be disappointed when you`re not playing regularly in the top-flight. “You can`t really dwell on the past and at least I can say that I`ve played in the Premier League. I think playing in the Premier League and getting to this level for anyone`s career is a highlight.”

“If I do get the chance to play I`ll give 100 per cent which I know is what the gaffer will expect from me. I`ve been doing that for the past four/five years so there`s no question about that. I`ve told the manager I want to prove myself and I`ve got another two years on my deal. I did that for a reason and I don`t like to bail out.”

It’s great to see that Shaun still has the motivation to fight for his place, despite being exiled for a second time. Maybe a loan move would be best for both parties, as I don’t see him getting ahead of Gunter or Kelly. I would still be content for him to stay in the long-term, as he showed great promise in the Championship winning season two years ago.
