Bad Start, But a Long Way to Go

Steve Coppell could not hide his disappointment at the weekends defeat but he does not want the match against West Ham to put a black mark against the entire start to the season that Reading have made.

Coppell told readingfc.co.uk, “The start will be coloured by that result on Saturday.

“If we’d won then everyone would have said ‘Reading had a really strong start.

“It would have been particularly strong, especially considering we’ve played four teams who finished above us last season.

“Yes, Saturday was a huge game, and more so given the fact a lot of players have got two weeks away.

“The start has been coloured because of that.

“On the back of that result and performance it will be coloured as a poor start.

“It would be nice to do something about it but it’s a bit ungratifying with so many away.”

The start to the season sees Reading in the bottom four with only four points from five matches, but that is only two points less than Reading had at this stage last season, so it could have been a lot worse, even more so when the opponents Reading have faced are looked at, and where they finished last season, and most probably will again this time.

There is a long way to go in the season, so with players returning and a week or more to prepare for the Sunderland match Coppell will be looking for a response.

Since getting past what looked the hard games on paper you must be disappointed with the last two games.

Long season seems that recently promoted teams seem to struggle in their second year in the top flight. If you survive this year you’ll be fine.

yes the Man United and Chelsea games were particuarly hard, so to have got even a point from these two was good, losing to Bolton and West Ham, and heavily not so good but Reading will return stronger. The break came at a good time, back on track with three points against Sunderland next weekend.
