Adkins: Penalty decision was right

Nigel Adkins was disappointed to see his side throw away a late lead against Millwall, but had no problem with the penalty decision.

The Royals were leading into injury time, thanks to an early goal from defender Sean Morrison, but threw it away in the final minutes. Adam Federici brought down Scott McDonald in the area and Liam Trotter stepped up to give the Lions a share of the points, one the Reading manager felt they deserved too.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘We put ourselves in a position to win the game, we’re 1-0 up in injury time and have to see the game out. There was a ball knocked into the box, we didn’t deal with the first header and weren’t close enough for the second ball.’

‘Then we’ve given the referee a decision to make, and it was the right decision to give a penalty. If you’re from Millwall you will think you deserved to get something from the game, and you can’t deny that for their efforts. They had a good result against QPR last week, worked hard and deserve credit.’

Good honesty there from Adkins, who I don’t particularly want to blame today, the players seemed to lack effort. I’m glad he put HRK in to add an extra number to the midfield, who were struggling for most of the game. The Kelly substitution may have raised questions, but Bridge may have had a knock.
