Nigel Adkins has had his chance to evaluate his players and has said that a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to strengthen the squad.

The 48-year old has had eight games to evaluate the players he inherited from Brian McDermott, but will now use the summer transfer period to mark his stamp on the side. Owner Anton Zingarevich has already said that he is going to back the manager in the transfer market where appropriate, as well as keeping key players.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘There’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes in the recruitment process and that will carry on all through the summer. We’ve had meetings and with targets that we’ve got it’s seeing now if we can go and secure them. We`ve had eight games to assess things.’

‘Like every club we`ll bring new recruits for next season and look forward with positivity. Like every team there will be changes over the summer, we`ll do our business diligently and quietly, and we have an opportunity to changes things around.’

We already know that Noel Hunt and Ian Harte are leaving the club, while the likes of Simon Church, Alex Pearce, Nicky Shorey, Mikele Leigertwood and Pavel Pogrebnyak could be joining them. This will allow Adkins to fill the void with players that he feels can fit into his fluid system.
