The Championship season continued with the latest round of games played over the weekend.
Newcastle’s win and Brighton’s loss extended the Magpies lead at the top to five points. Bristol City dropped into the bottom three – with Wigan and Rotherham – as Blackburn climbed out.

Birmingham’s victory in a derby last time round was short lived success with the Blues slipping to a sixth defeat in eight when Leeds left St Andrew’s with a 3-1 win on Friday.
The chance to return to the top of the Championship – albeit temporarily – was missed when Nottingham Forest thrashed automatic promotion chasing Brighton 3-0 at the City Ground. Forest’s three goals in the final half hour secured a first win in five to ease relegation concerns. Albion’s second successive defeat saw the gap to Newcastle – after they won in the late in the game on Saturday – up to five points.
Back-to-back victories were secured by Blackburn with a 1-0 win over relegation rivals Wigan. Tony Mowbray remains unbeaten since his appointment as boss with this Rovers victory taking them out of the relegation zone above both Bristol City and also Wolves. The Latics – who are now without a win in four – as four points from safety.
Bristol City’s sixth game without a win saw them drop into the relegation zone below Blackburn after a 0-0 draw with Burton. The Brewers’ point – with them three from safety – made it four unbeaten with the last three drawn.
A first win in seven was secured as Derby came from behind to beat Barnsley – the Tykes have won only once in seven – 2-1 at the iPro Stadium. However, the Rams remain 10 points adrift on the top six.
With Fulham recording a fourth win in five they boosted their play-off hopes whilst damaging Preston’s. The Cottagers remain five points off the play-offs with North End now nine off the top six after a first defeat in five.
Draw specialist Ipswich – a fourth in a row and fifth in six – were held to a 1-1 draw when Brentford hit back to secure a point at Portman Road. The Bees are unbeaten in three but drop to 14th.
One of Neil Warnock’s former sides QPR came from a goal down to beat Cardiff 2-1 at Loftus Road. The R’s survival bid was boosted with them now nine points clear of trouble with the Bluebirds remain 12th after a first defeat in five.
Reading recovered from back-to-back defeats to beat 10 man Wolves 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium. Wolves cancelled out a lead but a winner secured the Royals the points to leave Wolves just point and a place above the bottom three.
A fourth straight defeat – and eighth in the last nine – was suffered by rock bottom Rotherham. Aston Villa went away from the New York Stadium with a 2-0 win – a third straight victory – after second half goals to move 11 points clear of relegation trouble.
Sheffield Wednesday – after successive defeats – thumped Norwich 5-1 at Hillsborough to strengthen the play-off position. The Canaries fourth game without a win saw the gap to the Owls extended to nine points.
Huddersfield’s first defeat in eight meant Town missed the chance to close the gap on second place Brighton to three points. Newcastle’s 3-1 win took them five points clear of Albion at the top.
