The Championship season continued with the latest round of matches played over the weekend.
Newcastle’s lead at the top was extended with Brighton up to second. Blackburn dropped back into the bottom three with Wigan staying second-bottom and Rotherham rooted to the foot.

As Norwich slipped up, losing one-nil at Carrow Road against Preston – which extended the unbeaten run Simon Grayson’s side had been on to six-matches, this saw the Canaries drop out of the top two with Newcastle extending the lead at the top.
Rafa Benitez has guided Newcastle to ‘a little’ daylight at the top after a convincing three-nil win at St James’ Park against Ipswich with Brighton’s one-nil win at Wigan enough to see Albion up to the second automatic promotion place.
Burton welcomed former boss Gary Rowett back to the Pirelli Stadium with his Birmingham side going away from the Brewers with the home side running out two-nil winners on Friday to kick-off the weekend.
Steve Bruce made it two wins in a row after Aston Villa won at home for the first time under him with a one-nil win at Villa Park lifting them up the table, which was something Brentford missed the chance to do when the Bees suffered a disappointing two-nil win at Griffin Park against Barnsley.
A first win under Owen Coyle in the league quickly saw Blackburn revert to type with Rovers losing one-nil at Bristol City to drop back into the bottom three with the win for the Robins taking them back into the play-off places.
Huddersfield’s run of defeats ended with Town climbing back up to third after a dramatic late goal to see off Derby one-nil at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The poor Rotherham form continued with Reading the latest side to beat the Millers after a one-nil Royals win, with them now being cut adrift and in serious relegation troubled already. A five-points gap between them and second-bottom Wigan has already opened with another one-nil result from Sheffield Wednesday over QPR taking the Owls up to fifth.
Leeds continued to move forward with improvement being seen but the one-nil defeat Wolves suffered against Garry Monk’s side continues to see Wolves sliding the wrong way down the table with pressure growing on Walter Zenga with the Italian perhaps not going to get the time he’s hopeful of getting?
Neil Warnock continued his unbeaten start as Cardiff boss with a two-one win at Nottingham Forest seeing it two wins and a draw from his three-match in charge of the Bluebirds, who climbed out of the bottom three once again with Forest dragged perilously close to this.
