The latest games of the festive period will kick off on Thursday with Aston Villa looking to cut the gap on the play-off places – visiting Leeds currently hold one of these with Gary Monks side in 5th and chasing a fourth straight win.
Having seen off one relegation rival on Boxing Day Rotherham will seek to do the same against another when Burton visit the New York Stadium. The Millers could close to within six points of the Brewers – yet to win away from home – who sit just a place outside the bottom three ahead of these games.
Should Brighton extend their unbeaten run with a fifth straight win on Friday Chris Hughton knows his Albion side will go into the New Year as league leaders. However, Cardiff visit the Amex Stadium looking to cause an upset and ease their relegation fears.
Ipswich host another out of form side Bristol City a point and a place above the Robins in 16th. The Tractor Boys have lost two out of three in a run that’s seen them win just once in five. Lee Johnson’s side have lost seven of their last eight – including four in a row.
Having suffered a Boxing Day defeat at St James’ Park against Sheffield Wednesday a Newcastle reaction at home will be sought when struggling Nottingham Forest visit. Forest have lost three of the last four and sit just six points off the bottom three.
If Reading can record a third straight win – fourth in five – with continued impressive Madejski Stadium form against Fulham it would keep them a maximum of six points off an automatic promotion place. However, the visitors are unbeaten in five and are pushing for a top six place of their own.
New Years Eve will see Huddersfield get the action underway at the John Smith’s Stadium seeking a fifth straight run to extend their unbeaten run to six. Blackburn visit having lost four in a row with Rovers hopeful of ending this in the lunchtime kick off that could take them out of the bottom three – defeat and they’ll definitely end the year in a relegation place.
Barnsley have won four of their last five games – a third straight win could move the Tykes closer to a potential play-off place. Gianfranco Zola has lost both of his games in charge of Birmingham so will look to make it third time luck for the Blues.
An unbeaten run would tick on to 10 if Derby avoid defeat at the iPro Stadium – Steve McClaren would be keen on that happening with a ninth win in that period, which could put the Rams back into a top six place. Second bottom Wigan have lost five in a row and go into this four from safety.
Preston and Sheffield Wednesday met a few weeks back at Hillsborough – that is a game best recalled for North End teammates Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle clashing that saw both sent off! A first defeat in four is something the home side will look to react to when the Owls visit Deepdale – they beat Newcastle on Boxing Day to move into the play-offs.
Paul Lambert will seek to record successive Molineux wins for the first time as Wolves boss – if that happened against struggling QPR it would represent three in a row. The R’s have lost six in a row and will know a seventh could result in them ending the year in the bottom three.
The final Championship fixture of 2016 will see Brentford hosts Norwich in the evening kick off at Griffin Park. The Bees have won only three of their last 10 whereas the Canaries form has seen them beaten in eight of their last 10.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
