Ref Watch – Paul Taylor

Unless there is a late change, the referee scheduled for tomorrow night?s FA Cup replay with West Bromwich Albion is Mr Paul Taylor of Hertfordshire.

Taylor began his career in refereeing in the Isthmian League in 1977, he progressed up the ladder and became an assistant referee in the Football League in 1986, he then went on to become a league referee in 1990.

He refereed in the divisional play-offs in 2004 and in the same season he was fourth official for the FA Trophy Final.

Taylor became a Premiership official but it only lasted for one season, he got involved in a war with Arsene Wenger and then had to appear before an FA disciplinary committee to answer charges regarding alleged remarks made to Sean Farrell of Notts County. Farrell accused Taylor of using insulting language during the match, but the case against him was dropped.

Taylor was not included in the National Referee?s list for the following season.

Reading Games

As far as Reading are concerned this season, we have met up with Taylor twice, the first being at the start of the season when the Royals went down 2-1 at home to Plymouth Argyle. That afternoon Kevin Doyle and Glen Little both picked up yellow cards.

In December Taylor was back at the Mad Stad to take charge of the game with Brighton, a Kitson hat-trick and a goal apiece for Oatway and Hunt saw Reading run out 5-1 winners. Shorey picked up a yellow that day while Elphick, Hammond and Knight received yellows for the visitors. Elphick actually went one better and was sent off.

The Season So Far

So far this season Taylor has taken charge of 23 games giving out 65 yellow cards and four reds.
