We look at the key talking points among fans, following the win against Burton on Saturday.

————————————————————————————

Stam’s men adapt well to new shape – Eyebrows were raised when we saw the starting XI on Saturday, and even more so when we saw we lined up in an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation, with Obita and Gunter as wing backs. It proved to be a good move by Stam though, as we made up for a lack of midfield players with more focus being on the width and it was that emphasis that won us with the game, with Obita playing a big part in the opening two goals from having space on the left side.

Obita flourishes in wing-back role – Jordan Obita has had to be accustomed to life on the bench in recent weeks, after contesting the left-back spot with Tyler Blackett. Instead, both men took the field on Saturday, with Blackett playing in a central defensive three and Obita being a left-wing back, which seemed to suit both players, especially as both put in very good performances. Obita was key in both first half goals, winning the ball back really well for the first and providing a dangerous cross for Williams for the second.

Samuel proves his point – Yann Kermorgant was injured ahead of the game, so it was Dominic Samuel’s chance to shine in the league, and he took his opportunity. Not only did the academy graduate get on the scoresheet, but put in a good, all-round performance, using his pace to his advantage and linked up well with striking partner Garath McCleary. The young forward is still rough round the edges, but he would have been pleased to repay Stam’s faith.

Roy returns in new role – One surprise to see back in the team was Roy Beerens, as it was presumed he was rested against Wigan with Callum Harriott taking his place. Instead, it seems Roy had an injury, as he was restores straight back into the starting XI in a free role behind Samuel and McCleary. This seemed to work well, as the Dutchman was seeing more of the ball compared to previous games, where he was becoming anonymous. It wasn’t a fantastic performance from Roy, but was good to see him back in the grove in a new role. You do have to say though, imagine if Swifty was fit and played in that free role….. he could have a field day!

Tough games are to come – Four wins on the bounce and four clean sheets is a great achievement, but we can’t forget, those have come against four of the bottom seven teams. Our next four games on the flip side, are against four teams from the top ten. It’s good we’ve beaten the teams we should have in recent weeks, but going forward will be the real test of whether we are genuine promotion contenders this season.
