Steve Coppell is ready to pledge his future to Reading. The Royals boss, who is currently in contract negotiations with Nicky Hammond, looks set to sign for Reading on more then his usual one-year-at-a-time basis.

Coppell tends to prefer the honest approach of a year long contract and the freedom it allows both himself and the club but this time around there are positive signs that Coppell may extend his tenure further.

The Reading Evening Post exposed the news, revealing that Coppell feels his contract situation is “not an issue” and “he is happy at the club”.

Speaking to the paper, Nicky Hammond also revealed that “I have had some good discussions with Steve before the break and those conversations have been very good and I am hopefully we can move things forward quite quickly.”

Hammond spoke of the importance of signing down Coppell in relation to the Reading coaching squad. Kevin Dillon, Wally Downes and Nigel Gibbs find themselves out of contract come summer and can only sign extensions which run alongside their boss`s.

“Kev, Wally and Nigel, who is in his first year with us, have done exceptionally well, so we want to keep them together.

“There is a process and obviously the first thing we have to do is secure Steve Coppell and that is very positive.”
