Since his return from injury, ‘Superman’ Sonko has looked like he’s been playing with some kryptonite firmly lodged in a very uncomfortable place.
Sonko, who has conceded three penalties in four games is hoping he can rediscover his form during the African Nations Cup.
The Senegalese centre-back has admitted he has been performing below par as of late, and has apologised for his part in the two nil defeat at home to Portsmouth on New Years Day.
Sonko told ReadingFC.co.uk ‘I have apologised to the boys, all I can do is say sorry, I have told them they did well.
‘They are fine with me, but I blame myself.
‘It is not a freak penalty and I think it will be a good break for me to go away.
‘I was so excited to come back, I was fresh and now my form is going down, I don’t know what it is.
‘I think I am more excited about the Cup Of Nations now than I have been recently.
‘It is probably going to help me out as I need a break.’
Steve Coppell believes the reason for Sonko’s poor form is down to pressure; ‘We’ve been expecting too much of him. He’s been magnificent for this club.
‘He came back and his enthusiasm and desire put him in the frame. But then there’s the grind to get into, and that sometimes takes it toll.
‘It may well be that this is a decent time to reassess. He’ll have time on his hands when he goes away, and we’ll look forward to having him back.’
Sonko will leave after this weekend’s cup game at Spurs, although he may not be involved as Coppell may decide to look at his other options at the back.
