New Reading striker Karl Sheppard has expressed his delight in signing with the Royals, saying he wants to follow in footsteps of the likes of Royals legends Shane Long and Kevin Doyle.

The 20-year old signed from Shamrock Rovers on a free transfer a few days ago and was rated highly by many. Rival Championship sides Peterborough, Cardiff and today’s opponents Watford, were believed to be interested in the forward.

Sheppard told the official RFC site: ‘I’m buzzing for it, I can’t wait – it’s been a month since my last game so getting fitness is obviously something that I need to do and then hopefully I can break into the team.’

‘The history of bringing good Irish players through is something that intrigued me into coming here. There was interest from a few other Championship clubs as well but once I heard that Reading were in, there was only one club for me.’

The former Everton trainee can also play out wide and has been discribed as a sharp forward, who can hold the ball up and likes to play on the shoulders of defenders. Remind you of a certain Shane Long?

The Republic of Ireland U21 international will not be involved in today’s game at Watford despite a recent striker injury crisis, as he is in the process of moving to Berkshire.
