Young Irish striker Karl Sheppard has completed his move to Championship side Reading, where he has signed a two-and-a-half year deal. The deal was a free transfer, as he had been out of contract since the end of the Irish season.

McDermott has watched the Republic of Ireland U21 international on numerous occasions and is believed to have fought off the likes of Blackpool, Cardiff and Peterborough to catch the young starlet.

The 20-year old told the Irish Times: ‘It`s a club with a great history of bringing Irish players through and obviously I`d like to emulate the likes of Kevin [Doyle] and Shane [Long] by doing well there too.

“It`s somewhere that I know that if I play well then I`ll get my chance, that`s what the manager has said to me, and that`s what I`m looking forward to doing. I can`t wait to get started at this stage.”

The former Everton trainee has been highlighted for his performances not only in the Irish league but the Europa League qualifying rounds. He scored nine goals in 23 appearances for the Rovers.
