Reading have reportedly been linked with Tottenham defender Bongani Khumalo on loan, after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has said he needs more first team experience.

The South African international spent the latter of last season on loan at Preston North End, where he appeared 6 times for the Lilywhites.

Royals boss Brian McDermott is keen to add to the defensive side of his squad following the departures of Matt Mills, Ivar Ingimarsson and Zurab Khizanishvilli.

Khumalo was a key member of South Africa’s squad at the 2010 World Cup and infact scored in their 2-1 win over France.

Reading have already welcomed back former defender Ibrahima Sonko on trial in an attempt to solve these defensive problems and the Senegalese international will play some part in today’s game at Northampton.
