Reading manager Brian McDermott has said striker Adam Le Fondre is capable of playing for England.

The 26-year old came off the bench against Chelsea yesterday to score two very important goals to earn the Royals a point against the European Champions. It is Alfie’s sixth goal coming off of the bench this campaign and is being talked about for a potential England call-up.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McDermott said: ‘Well, you tell me what his chances are. I just hope Ray Lewington [England assistant manager] didn`t leave at 2-0! I`ll give him a ring and make sure, he probably thinks we lost 2-0! It was a masterclass of finishing.’

‘I spoke to Adam when he joined us and said England has to be something you look at it. That`s his goal, he`s one of the top English goalscorers and it`ll be interesting to see. And I`m not selling him! We did his contract recently and I am very, very glad we did!’

Unfortunately, Alfie hasn’t been selected in Roy Hodgson’s most recent squad for Brazil, not that it surprises me though. However, if he continues to score goals at this level, I certainly wouldn’t put it beyond him to earn a cap for his country.
