Reading manager Brian McDermott has revealed his ‘heart break’ of losing Gylfi Sigurdsson two years ago to Hoffenheim.
The Royals academy graduate broke into the first team in 2009 under former boss Brendan Rodgers, but enjoyed his best football under the 51-year old at the Madejski Stadium. Gylfi then moved to German side Hoffenheim in a £8 million move, before completing a move to Tottenham over the summer, following a successful loan spell at Swansea.
Speaking to Jonny Fordham of the Evening Post, McDermott said: ‘The deal was a good one for us but I remember at the time, personally, it broke my heart to see him walk out the door. Gylfi is such a good guy and we have great relationships with Gylfi and his family. To see him do as well as he has makes us all proud.’
Sigurdsson could only make the bench for Spurs in this afternoon’s game and McDermott felt the 23-year old didn’t want to leave Berkshire two years ago. He added: ‘It`s my gut feeling that he never overly wanted to leave. It was the right thing for him financially and the club needed that money at the time.’
