Reading manager Brian McDermott has spoke out about his failed transfers at the end of the January transfer window, revealing that he missed out on big-signing’s of Wayne Bridge and Keith Andrews.
Bridge was reportedly all set to join the Royals on loan after agreeing terms with the former England international. However, once Bridge heard of Sunderland’s last minute interest, he was keen to stay in the Premier League.
McDermott told the Reading Chronicle: ‘We spoke about Wayne Bridge and he went to Sunderland. I spoke to his agent and to Man City, I think we could have done it. We’d have paid a small percentage of his wages, but that’s gone now, he made his decision and good luck to him.’
Andrews, 31, eventually moved to Premier League strugglers Blackburn Rovers. It was reported on the day before the transfer deadline day, he had rejected Ipswich’s contract and was interested in a move to the Madejski Stadium.
McDermott also commented on the potential Andrews deal and added: ‘I know Keith Andrews and his agent, we had a conversation but he had the opportunity to go to West Brom on a six-month deal in the Premiership.’
However, McDermott has been keen to reiterate that he is more than happy with his squad and admitting that loans won’t be needed, despite missing out on two players on deadline day. Craig Mackail Smith was also a target he was keen to bring in.
