Reading to be reported for ‘tapping up’?

It was one of his first press conferences after his new squad returned to pre season training last week, but Brendan Rodgers may already be regretting what he had to say.

Telling the media that he knew Watford striker Tommy Smith wanted to join the club, despite now having permission to talk to the striker, was hardly the brightest thing he could have done.

And now the board at Watford are deciding on whether to take any further action following the comments, with chairman Jimmy Russo threatening to report both Reading and Rodgers himself to the FA.

Rodgers bold comments in that press conference reminded me of his mentor, the ‘special one’ Jose Mourinho. However it may have been wise for the former Watford manager to get his feet under the table before he chooses to shout his mouth off again!

While some fans are unhappy at his comments as ‘it is not the Reading way’ and it was not how Steve Coppell chose to do things, it is quite refreshing to see a manager talk his team up instead of worrying about what others may think.

The likelyhood is nothing will come of ‘the Tommy Smith tapping up affair’ but if we value this player enough why do we not simply stump up the cash needed instead of offering over £1million under the asking price? A cash strapped Watford are hardly going to report us then are they?
