Reading Denied By Late Goal

Reading were denied what would have been a vitally important win over Middlesbrough at the Madejski Stadium after Middlesbrough managed to salvage a point late on through Tuncay Sanli.

Dave Kitson put Reading ahead in the first half with a delightful lob over Ross Turnball, but with Reading frightened to make mistakes Middlesbrough earned the point that Steve Coppell told the BBC they deserved, so this lack of confidence cost Reading and they paid the price when Tuncay equalised with less than ten minutes to play: “I thought it was a fair result. We weren’t fluent, but having got in front it was disappointing to lose the initiative.

“We were frightened of making mistakes and because of that we were frightened of doing anything. It was unfamiliar from what we’ve been used to, but sometimes you have to say it’s not our day, take a point and move on.

“It will be three from seven or eight who go down, it depends who goes on a good run of form. Every game is vital, home games are important for us, but we have to improve our away form or it will be a sticky season for us.”

The draw maintains the gap between the two sides, but a victory would have given Reading some clear daylight between themselves and the drop zone.
