Brian McDermott felt his team lacked cutting edge during their 1-0 loss to Hull on Saturday, which has also seen the Royals score 2 goals in their last 3 league games.
Robbie Brady’s cross-shot effort was the only goal in the game that saw Hull win their first home game of the season. In the wake of the defeat, McDermott told the RFC official site: ‘The shape of our team was OK and we didn’t really look like conceding a goal.’
‘But it was a poor goal from our point of view, he came inside and has gone to cross it and it’s gone in the top corner, but we need to get tighter on the first ball. We lacked a little bit of an edge today’
Brian however was full of praise for our new centre-back Kaspars Gorkss who made his first start for the club. ‘I thought Kaspars did really well at the back, but we need to do more to win games away from home.’
Reading have also failed to score in the first half of games this season. McDermott added: ‘That’s the first time I’ve been involved in a game at Reading where it looked like at 0-0 we were settling and that’s not what we’re about; we didn’t do enough with the ball and we have to be better with the ball and create more chances.’
McDermott will now regroup his squad for a home tie against Watford in a fortnight’s time, with the international break taking its toll.
