McDermott has been in charge since the 16th December 2009 on a caretaker basis after spending 10 years at the club as Chief Scout and reserve team manager. After 2 draws and 3 defeats in his league games in charge,as well as cup wins over Liverpool and Burnley, he has been rewarded with a rolling 12 month contract.

He has been allowed to bring in three players on loan and no one was ever interviewed for the vacant manager’s position so McDermott was the only option for the board.

McDermott was relieved to have finally been given the job and is now focused on getting the club out of the relegation zone. He told the official Reading website, ‘I am delighted to have been appointed manager of a club that is very dear to my heart and I would like to thank the chairman.’

Vital Reading would like to wish McDermott all the best – he will need it!
